Our Sustainability

We believe that our patch of earth in the lush and fertile Okanagan Valley is among the most stunning places in the world: set on the shore of a glassy blue lake, generously warmed by BC sunshine, home to countless birds, insects and critters.

Every operating decision we make reflects our pride of place. We’ve installed sophisticated water-management tools and drip irrigation in 95% of our vineyards, we seed grass and cover crops between rows of vines to reduce evaporation and we use compost and organic fertilizers to build healthy soil. Our cutting-edge Agrotherm tech even controls pests without chemicals.

Knowledge in Action

Old Vines Restaurant joined the Ocean Wise initiative in 2007 soon after its launch in BC. Based on our philosophy to use sustainable and local ingredients, we have continued to ensure our seafood along with proteins are ethically caught and raised.

To protect the fragile ecosystems of the Okanagan Valley, we’ve joined forces with the Nature Conservancy of Canada in a quest to protect our natural grasslands and water systems. 2022 marks 10 years of partnership, and more than $100,000 donated to support conservation areas in British Columbia.

In 2022, Quails' Gate vineyards were certified sustainable by Sustainable Winegrowing BC, a made-in-BC program that leads the way in sustainable winegrowing practices and sets a standard for the province and rest of the country. We are honoured to be recognized alongside grapegrowers and wineries across the province who are dedicated to making wine production sustainable now and for the future.

Purveyor Spotlight

One of the things that make our farm-business model work is the continued support of restaurants like Old Vines at Quails’ Gate Winery.  The commitment to quality that Chef Roger has and his support of local, sustainable farming is what helps farms like ours grow and prosper.
